The text of the petition is as follows:
ANTI-REPLACEMENT WORKER PETITION
TO THE HONOURABLE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY OF THE PROVINCE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED
The petition of the undersigned residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, Humbly Sheweth;
WHEREAS strikes and lock outs are rare, and on average 97% of collective agreements are negotiated without work disruption; and
WHEREAS Anti-Temporary Replacement Workers laws have existed in Quebec since 1978; in British Columbia since 1993; and successive governments in those provinces have never repealed those laws; and
WHEREAS Anti-Temporary Replacement Workers legislation has reduced the length and divisiveness of labour disputes; and
WHEREAS the use of Temporary Replacement Workers during a strike or lock-out is damaging to the social fabric of a community, the local economy, and the wellbeing of its residents, as evident by the recent use of temporary replacement workers by both Ocean Choice International and Vale in Voisey’s Bay;
We the undersigned, petition the House of Assembly to urge government to enact legislation banning the use of Temporary Replacement Workers during a strike or lock out.
And as in duty bound your petitioners will ever pray.
